Firefox – Indigestione da plugin: portate l’Alka-Seltzer!

La volpe si sà è un animale goloso. Anche Mozilla Firefox è un browser mangione: si ciba principalmente di plugin. Ma quanti ne può mangiare prima di stare male? E'questa la domanda che si son posti numerosi utenti: per primo Splasho, che ha provato a installare nel proprio browser le 100 estensioni più popolari ... il risultato che ha ottenuto è un po'caotico ma il software è rimasto stabile!

It takes around seven seconds to start up. It freezes for at least one second between pages (I guess a lot is hanging on the onLoad.) It has not yet crashed, half hour or so I’ve browsed with it, since all the extensions have been installed (for some reason it did crash immediately after installing them, before restarting.)

La cosa stupefacente è che codice così eterogeneo, scritto da programmatori da tutto il mondo, rimanga così stabile! Si vede che l'infrastruttura che ci sta dietro è stata ben progettata!

Qualcuno però non era contento: CyberNotes ha pensato che si poteva dare di più (...perché dentro di noi si può osare di più senza essere eroi). Così ha deciso di installare 200 estensioni in un colpo solo! Tra le altre cose, il tipo ci ha guadagnato una Guinness. Perchè, pur tra prevedibili rallentamenti, anche in questo caso Firefox è rimasto stabile!. Vi allego solo lo screenshot principale, nell'articolo originale ce ne sono molti di più:

E ora passiamo ai commenti sulle prestazioni:

Ahhh…the beauty of Firefox is in the eye of the beholder and let me say that it looks pretty sweet when running in Vista. It took 6-minutes to start Firefox with the 200 extensions installed but it worked! Not only that but there are the popup windows that you get for certain extensions right after they are installed…yeah…I received 47 of those. That also seemed to delay the initial start time but I didn’t sit there filling out information for all of the options, otherwise that would have taken me hours.

It was quite a site to see and there was a very limited viewing area for websites because of the toolbars. On my 24″ widescreen monitor I had about 2″ of viewable area at the bottom of the browser. But hey, it was still usable.

Firefox is notorious for its memory leaks but it didn’t turn out to be as bad as I thought. By the time Firefox would start after a few minutes it had climbed up to 145MB but it capped off around 195MB

Insomma... tutto questo è possibile! 100, 200 ... non c'è due senza tre giusto?
