So, everyone nowadays has a smartphone (iPhone, Android or Blackberry, not to forget all the new shiny tablets) and wherever you are, everyone is busy typing and typing on the touch screen. Have you ever considered how what you type on the screen could be read by someone looking over your shoulder? And have you considered all the CCTV cameras, how confident are you that whoever is behind the screens to oversee those cameras may not be interested in peeking at your phone screen instead? Will Google+ beat Facebook?

So a week ago I have managed to get hold of a Google+ invite, and I managed to play with it for a while now. I am also a quite "greedy" Facebook user so it was a good occasion to find out if and why I would like to move to the new service:

Seamlessly integrates with phone: so yes, I own an Android phone (HTC Desire HD) and of course I love the fact that Google+ is working perfectly with my phone, with push updates and all the goodies
Straightforward privacy approach: although the actual functionality is not "revolutionary" (as in, you can pretty much achieve the same level of privacy / re sharing with Facebook), the usability of the Circles interface is far more simple and straightforward than the dungeon of privacy ticks, groups etc... which you can find in Facebook
Interface: apart from the "Circles" feature, the interface in general seems to me less bulky and quite user-friendly. Main reason being probably the opportunity for Google to redesign it from scratch and attempt to get it right from the start, trying to address what are regarded as basic "flaws" in Facebook (such as, for example, the complex settings / privacy flags in it)

It's already there everyone knows it, it's part of mass culture already and even my dog has signed up for it and is showcasing a Facebook profile
More features altough Google Plus is still in beta and you would expect them to integrate quickly a lot of features (for example, they could integrate the Calendar as an "Events" function, which is missing ATM), Facebook takes the lead at the moment with the number of features offered. However, sometimes it could also be a drawback (for instance, do you really need Farmville and all the annoying updates coming from it)

So, in short:

Google Plus it's the novelty, it's cool because "it's from Google" and just integrates seamlessly with your Android phone (a strong plus for Android users such as me)
Facebook it's the mainstream option, everyone has a profile already and everyone is used to it. Will it be enough to keep the lead?

HTC Desire – Android smartphone

Now that I've spent quite a sum of money in purchasing a HTC Desire HD Smartphone, it's time to try and learn how to code for the little nifty device: since I've got it I am finding myself more and more addicted. Surely you can live without it, but it's so convenient so why not have it! So, I am lazy and using Windows at the moment, so I've just installed the latest Eclipse package (Helios) with the ADT plugin and I am up and running in a few minutes. So yep, it's time to try and dare with a nice Hello World library, and for this there is another nice tutorial to show out the basic. It's pretty standard if you are coming from Java, but it's useful to get into the feeling. In a few seconds you have launched an emulator which allow you to test your code... well actually, my laptop is so crap that it takes longer to launch the emulator than to write down a few lines of code lol. It's time to get a nice Android book now. Any suggestions?

Wind rimodula le offerte internet mobile

E te pareva che cambiando operatore non mi cambiavano anche le tariffe sotto il naso. Da quando sono passato a Wind avevo sottoscritto una comodissima tariffa di 3 euro mensili per avere un bonus di traffico dati (750 € equivalenti al mese) più che sufficiente per tutte le mie necessità. Questi maledetti hanno tuttavia rimodulato le offerte, e dal 17 Novembre 2008 la tariffa i-mode NO LIMITS diventerà una ciofeca totale, con una specie di piano tariffario a tempo (cosa per cui ero scappato da Vodafone) per di più relativo al traffico di tipo WAP ... cosa me ne faccio del WAP nel 2008 quasi 2009?? ~~Oltretutto dal sito sono scomparse praticamente tutte le opzioni che fino a pochi giorni fa erano presenti, lasciando ben poca scelta.~~ Edit: le ho ritrovate, l'alternativa sarebbe la Mega 1500 a 8 € al mese che però offre una quantità dati esorbitante per me, visti i miei consumi attuali che prevedono poche e frequenti connessioni a basso traffico.

Commenti? Inutile dire che di fronte a un simile comportamento non ci metterò molto ad abbandonare l'operatore sotto cui sono appena passato, se è questa la loro scarna offerta internet. Idee e/o consigli?

Browser war: Google Chrome

In principio era Internet Explorer, poi da un certo punto in poi hanno iniziato a fiorire vari tipi di software alternativi per la navigazione in internet: Mozilla Firefox e Opera sono sicuramente i concorrenti più agguerriti (nel campo mobile specialmente quest'ultimo con Opera Mini).

Da oggi anche Google fa il suo ingresso in campo con la beta del browser Chrome, che promette un'usabilità più elevata secondo la filosofia tipica del gigante di Mountain View.

Che dire? Io da tempo sono passato a Firefox: tuttavia nelle ultime release sta venendo meno la principale motivazione per cui avevo scelto questo browser, ovvero la velocità di caricamento e di rendering. Stamattina ho installato Chrome (nonostante alcune riserve espresse altrove) e lo proverò per un po'di tempo, poi vi saprò dire.

Cellulare e VoIP: atto terzo

Eccoci giunti alla nuova puntata della soap opera più seguita dell'estate: Vortexmind che tenta di far funzionare il VoIP sul suo cellulare nuovo. Ebbene, ce l'ho fatta. Grazie a Fring, ho potuto configurare un account SIP relativo al servizio che ho voluto provare per questo test: InterVoIP. Si tratta di un operatore che fornisce numerosi servizi. Le tariffe sono abbastanza convenienti, in special modo verso l'estero, i fissi e per inviare SMS. Con Fring è facilissimo: basta impostare un account SIP generico (ci sono infatti quelli predefiniti pre-impostati) e inserire username, password e indirizzo del proxy SIP (dati che si trovano sui siti di ciascun operatore SIP). Poi basta selezionare un contatto dalla rubrica, premere il tasto di chiamata e selezionare "Telefonata SIP".

Il mio test è stato di una nerderia estrema: sono andato in camera mia e ho telefonato a mia mamma sul cellulare (era in cucina ) passando dall'access point WiFi della mia ADSL. La qualità della voce è ottima, c'è solo un leggero ritardo rispetto alla fonia tradizionale ma niente di esagerato. La convenienza, specialmente in caso di connessione dati "aggratis" (nel senso di non UMTS) è evidente: 6 cent al minuto + IVA (anche per chiamare a Londra eheh).

Seguiranno altri test: fortunatamente grazie a Fring posso aggirare la mancanza del client VoIP presente nel firmware nokia. Evviva!

E’uscito Fring per Symbian 9.3 (N78)

A integrazione di quanto detto nei giorni scorsi, segnalo che è stata finalmente rilasciata la versione di Fring per Symbian 9.3. Grazie a questo spero di poter aggirare la limitazione imposta dalla mancanza del client nokia VoIP e di utilizzare l'implementazione Fring per chiamare in VoIP dal cellulare Vi farò sapere come procedono questi smanettamenti ...

Nokia N78 e il VoIP

Quando ho acquistato il Nokia N78 ho dato per scontato che avesse al suo interno un'implementazione di un client VoIP "nativo", essendo possibile impostare account SIP per fruire dei servizi di fonia vocale di terze parti. E invece, con mia grande sorpresa, ho scoperto che attualmente l'N78 non contiene un implementazione del client VoIP Nokia. Il che, tradotto in parole povere, significa che non è possibile usare servizi VoIP da fornitori che non rendano disponibile una propria implementazione (software) del client (come, ad esempio, Skype o Fring).

Dimenticanza? Feature che verrà introdotta in una successiva release del firmware? Oppure politica aziendale forzata dagli operatori di telefonia mobile che si troverebbero seriamente compromessi dalla possibilità di escludere le reti tradizionali per il traffico fonia (passando invece su wi-fi)? Io non so, spero in una futura versione del firmware ... ma mi sembra alquanto strano che una capacità già presente sui telefoni di generazione precedente sia improvvisamente scomparsa!

Scimmia telefonica – Nokia N78

So che tutti si aspettano un resoconto della avventura a Київ, ma per il momento dovrete attendere perchè preferisco lasciar sedimentare un po'tutto prima di rivolgermi alle masse. Per il momento la mia attenzione è presa dal cellulare che, dopo tante considerazioni, ho deciso di acquistare: il Nokia N78. Questo telefono mi interessava soprattutto per le elevate capacità applicative e per la presenza della connessione wi-fi, utili cioè a sfruttare internet, instant messaging e chiamate Voip ovunque disponibile. E'presente anche un navigatore A-GPS: non che io ne abbia particolarmente bisogno (anzi, la mia proverbiale capacità di orientamento non è stata scalfita nemmeno dal cirillico): oggi però ci ho giocherellato un po'e tutto questo mi è costato il prosciugamento del credito (fortunatamente non troppo alto) della mia SIM, convintissimo com'ero di utilizzare la mia connessione wi-fi e non la connessione 3G.

Ecco alcune applicazioni che ho installato: Opera Mini (browser) e Google Maps. Per la messaggistica/voip pensavo di installare Fring, ma al momento il mio terminale non è supportato (lo sarà a breve) . Nel mentre, pensavo di installare e provare Nimbuzz. Qualcuno lo conosce/lo ha provato? O ha applicazioni da consigliare?

Ultima considerazione sulle tariffe. Dopo essermi fatto fregare il credito come un imbecille (colpa mia ovviamente) ho comunque controllato le tariffe del mio attuale operatore (Vodafone) e non mi soddisfano per nulla. Penso quindi di passare a Wind e fare una delle opzioni Internet No Limits che prevedono un forfait di traffico dati mensile. Gli scatti a tempo non hanno assolutamente alcun senso per me.

Star Wars : The Force Unleashed Tech

Per motivi di tempo (e di hardware inadeguato ) non ho più seguito molto la scena dei videogame ... però mi è capitato sullo schermo questo tech demo di Star Wars : The Force Unleashed. E devo dire che l'engine grafico che anima i personaggi (Euphoria) è veramente uno spasso! Io ero rimasto alla ragdoll ...

Oltretutto, come spiegato nel video, Euphoria non è l'unico motore usato (ce ne sono tre differenti a seconda dell'oggetto da animare) e quindi sarà stato sicuramente un bel casino interfacciarli tutti e tre in modo che potessero comunicare tra di loro. I risultati sono sorprendenti: tra l'altro, questo motore è usato anche in GTA4. Si parla di sistemi scheletro / muscolari totalmente simulati in tempo reale! Niente animazioni predefinite ... (...)
