500px vs Flickr – Online Photo Sharing services
After being a loyal Flickr fan for years (and pro subscriber), I have to say that I am on the verge of betraying them and move to 500px. A quick comparison of the two follows. Please note I am not comparing the Free service, I want unlimited uploads and storage and both services are offering it only on the paid subscription.
Flickr
- Price: 24.95 $ (or ~ 15.5 £ ) a year
- Unlimited Load / Storage: Yes
- Unlimited Sets: Yes
- Original file storage: Yes
- Other: Ad free browsing / Stats / HD video upload
- Pros: good privacy & licensing options for each picture. Well established website with a large user base.
- Cons: pricier than 500px , so-so interface and UI, has not changed much lately
- Price: Plus 19.95 $ (or ~ 12.3 £ ) (*)
- Unlimited Load / Storage: Yes
- Unlimited Sets: Yes
- Original file storage: ???
- Other: Stats / Sets / Stories
- Pros: Slick'n Sexy interface. Very good content quality, Cheaper than Flickr with the "Plus" option
- Cons:Less flexible in Privacy and licensing options
Both services do offer a Developer API to integrate with them, I have not used them so far so I can't really feedback on that. In general I think it's going to be difficult to move away from Flickr at least for me, as up there I have pretty much every picture I took since I own a digital camera on their servers (that's around ~7K images). However recently when I want to showcase a particular picture and get some feedback from other photographers, I've found that this is much easier to be done on 500px . I used to invest a lot of time in Flickr years ago, and back then it was easier to get feedback, but today it seems much more difficult to simply upload a pic and get some instant feedback. As soon as I created the 500px account instead, and put some photos up there, I got an instant reaction from other photographers and felt that it was quite easy to reciprocate by visiting their stream and have a look!
In short, not sure if I am going to migrate, mainly because it will be a painful process if I decide to do it...but I am very tempted!
(*) They also offer an "Awesome" package at 49.95 $ ( or ~ 31 £ ) a year which includes a personalised portfolio with Google Analytics integration. Don't need it, not considering it in my comparison!
Spying on your smartphone over the shoulder…
So, everyone nowadays has a smartphone (iPhone, Android or Blackberry, not to forget all the new shiny tablets) and wherever you are, everyone is busy typing and typing on the touch screen. Have you ever considered how what you type on the screen could be read by someone looking over your shoulder? And have you considered all the CCTV cameras, how confident are you that whoever is behind the screens to oversee those cameras may not be interested in peeking at your phone screen instead? This paper explores the problem and the effectiveness of the methods used to automatically capture what you type.
Will Google+ beat Facebook?
So a week ago I have managed to get hold of a Google+ invite, and I managed to play with it for a while now. I am also a quite "greedy" Facebook user so it was a good occasion to find out if and why I would like to move to the new service:

Seamlessly integrates with phone: so yes, I own an Android phone (HTC Desire HD) and of course I love the fact that Google+ is working perfectly with my phone, with push updates and all the goodies
Straightforward privacy approach: although the actual functionality is not "revolutionary" (as in, you can pretty much achieve the same level of privacy / re sharing with Facebook), the usability of the Circles interface is far more simple and straightforward than the dungeon of privacy ticks, groups etc... which you can find in Facebook
Interface: apart from the "Circles" feature, the interface in general seems to me less bulky and quite user-friendly. Main reason being probably the opportunity for Google to redesign it from scratch and attempt to get it right from the start, trying to address what are regarded as basic "flaws" in Facebook (such as, for example, the complex settings / privacy flags in it)

It's already there everyone knows it, it's part of mass culture already and even my dog has signed up for it and is showcasing a Facebook profile
More features altough Google Plus is still in beta and you would expect them to integrate quickly a lot of features (for example, they could integrate the Calendar as an "Events" function, which is missing ATM), Facebook takes the lead at the moment with the number of features offered. However, sometimes it could also be a drawback (for instance, do you really need Farmville and all the annoying updates coming from it)
So, in short:
- Google Plus it's the novelty, it's cool because "it's from Google" and just integrates seamlessly with your Android phone (a strong plus for Android users such as me)
- Facebook it's the mainstream option, everyone has a profile already and everyone is used to it. Will it be enough to keep the lead?

Un tempo giocavamo con gli Exogini ed il Crystal Ball: tante cose terribilmente e nostalgicamente troppo anni ottanta per essere ricordate senza evocare calde lacrimuccie sulle gote. Ma altre cose, seppur rivisitate tramite i concetti di Web 2.0 e Social Network, non cambiano mai. Parlo di Yahoo! Answers, un servizio che non ha nulla da invidiare ai tempi d'oro di GirlPower e Cioè. Stamattina, cercando in rete, sono casualmente incappato in questo servizio e non ho potuto fare a meno di scompisciarmi dalle risate leggendo le varie domande e risposte degli utenti...
Non perderti un concerto con last.fm Events!
Non so se conoscete last.fm, il social web dedicato alla musica che "ricorda" le canzoni che ascoltate e vi suggerisce nuovi artisti. Ebbene, è da poco attiva una nuova funzionalità molto interessante: se siete registrati, è possibile ottenere un feed di tutti gli eventi musicali cui potreste essere interessati (magari perchè riguardano artisti che ascoltate o simili). Basta dire dove abitate, impostare un raggio in Km entro il quale siete eventualmente disposti a muovervi e voilà ... avrete a disposizione un comodo feed da mettere nel vostro feedreader preferito che vi ricorderà tutti gli concerti da non perdere! Ovviamente il sistema basa il suo funzionamento sugli eventi inseriti dagli utenti, quindi potete aggiungerne di nuovi se non sono già presenti nel sistema. E poi volete mettere la felicità di scoprire che anche l'utente Maialona_da_sbarco1980 parteciperà proprio allo stesso concerto dove andrete voi? :asd:
OkNotizie: aumentano i volumi di traffico
Francamente sono rimasto sorpreso. Il post di ieri, che è rimasto a lungo (direi circa 24 ore) nell'homepage di OkNotizie, ha portato qui diverse migliaia di visitatori. Utilizzando più sistemi di statistiche, non vi so dire il numero preciso. Le mie statistiche interne (che ritengo più precise, in quanto funzionanti tramite PHP in locale), mi hanno segnalato ieri più di settemila visitatori unici, e di questi quasi quattromila sono arrivati dal servizio di Alice. Per quanto mi riguarda, sono numeri molto interessanti: giusto per dire, quando un'anno fa il mio post su htaccess finì in homepage su digg.com, quel giorno arrivai a più di novemila visitatori unici. Certo ci sono da fare alcune considerazioni
Il futuro dell’informazione – I quotidiani cartacei
Prima di buttarmi di testa nel fantastico mondo della programmazione, ho pensato di mettere nero su bianco un insieme informe di pensieri che mi vaga in testa da qualche giorno. Una cosa che ho notato ultimamente è la generale inadeguatezza dei quotidiani di carta stampata rispetto all'informazione online. Perchè parlo di inadeguatezza? I motivi sono più d'uno.
In primis, la velocità di propagazione delle notizie è estremamente minore. Uno può pensare che questo sia dovuto alla necessità di maggiori verifiche delle fonti. In realtà ormai la maggior parte dei quotidiani pubblica le stesse notizie che appaiono in rete, con un ritardo temporale che può andare dai giorni alle settimane (se non ai mesi). E'evidente che questo modo di fare informazione non è più in grado di stare al passo con le più moderne tecnologie (penso ai Feed RSS e agli aggregatori di notizie), così come è evidente che anche online ormai esistono fonti autorevoli e sempre aggiornate cui fare riferimento (penso, ad esempio a New Scientist per l'informazione tecnologico/scientifica).
Card games – Buco di culo
C'è poco da dire ... essendo questa una serata di riposo posso dedicarmi a spiegare a tutti voi un fantastico gioco di carte dal nome molto singolare: buco di culo. Prima che pensiate male, vi anticipo che il nome è l'appellativo dato a chi perde una partita, perchè una volta che si diventa tali è molto difficile affrancarsi e riguadagnare la libertà di gioco :) Siccome questo passatempo sarà sicuramente ricordato come un evento fondamentale dell'anno 2006, mi sembra il minimo dedicargli tutti gli onori e spiegare bene come funziona in questo post. Il gioco è una versione modificata e italianizzata di un omonimo gioco francese, che è stato tramandato per via rettale fino a noi dai tempi del Neanderthal
