Nuclear plants in Italy – why not?
So well, after the recent disaster in Japan, I felt like an urge of putting down some notes on the nuclear choice. In the past, I already wrote (in italian) on Chernobyl disaster and the permanent (i.e. thousands of years worth) damage that occurred in that area, along with the looming threat of a new disaster should the containment structure there fail.
So yeah, while the events are unfolding in the far east, in Italy the debate over building new reactors in my country is still ongoing. The government is is planning to build new, expensive reactors in Italy, and the news from Japan are not putting down the politicians in their intents. Now, if you are not Italian you have to know that my country actually built four reactors in the eighties. Those were shut down after a ballot question following Chernobyl's 1986 nuclear disaster. One of them (Caorso plant) is actually built very close to my hometown (around ~ 20 Km).

22 anni dopo Chernobyl
Dopo aver perso la giornata di ieri per raccontare cose fantasiose, inutili e francamente noiose (mea culpa), oggi mi impegno a ricordare un evento che è avvenuto non troppo tempo addietro.
Era la primavera del 1986. Io ero piccolo allora, avevo 5 anni. Eppure mi ricordo quel giorno strano, durante il quale mia madre (con la premura tipica di un genitore) mi proibì di uscire di casa perchè a suo dire "era pericoloso". Ricordo anche che per qualche tempo non mangiammo più gli ortaggi che crescevano nell'orto e non bevemmo latte. Io all'epoca non capivo molto, specialmente quando alla TV sentivo parlare di un luogo dal nome strano come Chernobyl, che sembrava collegato a quelle strane disposizioni.

Incidente per il treno Transrapid maglev
Un grave incidente è avvenuto oggi in Germania: il treno a levitazione magnetica Transrapid si è infatti schiantato contro un carrello di manutenzione a una velocità di circa 200 Km/h (la velocità massima di questo mezzo è circa 450 Km/h). Le vittime (il treno non ha conducente) sono almeno 19: si tratta perlopiù di dipendenti dell'azienda, in quanto il treno stava effettuando un viaggio di test. La linea in questione collega infatti Monaco di Baviera con l'aeroporto, ed è stata costruire per velocizzare l'accesso all'impianto aeroportuale. Chissà se ora questo progetto andrà avanti oppure verrà completamente revisionato. I treni a levitazione magnetica infatti hanno costi più o meno simili alle normali linee ad alta velocità, però sono molto più veloci. Maggiori notizie qui, qui e su wikipedia.

Tsunami, l’orologio che gira
Ormai è quasi passato un anno e mezzo: era il 26 Dicembre del 2004 quando un terribile terremoto sottomarino (9.15 gradi della scala Richter) causò un immenso tsunami: le ondate si abbatterono in tutto l'Oceano Indiano, causando decine e decine di migliaia di vittime (le stime più recenti parlano di oltre 230.000 morti). Penso che tutti ricorderete l'evento e le drammatiche immagini che circolarono in quei giorni. Oggi, navigando in rete, ho trovato su questo sito un reportage fotografico che mette a confronto i luoghi della tragedia in Thailandia, visti a più di un'anno di distanza dal terribile disastro. Immagini sicuramente impressionanti, che però mostrano quanto l'uomo sia in grado di ricostruire quello che è andato perduto e di ripartire da zero.
