500px vs Flickr – Online Photo Sharing services
After being a loyal Flickr fan for years (and pro subscriber), I have to say that I am on the verge of betraying them and move to 500px. A quick comparison of the two follows. Please note I am not comparing the Free service, I want unlimited uploads and storage and both services are offering it only on the paid subscription.
Flickr
- Price: 24.95 $ (or ~ 15.5 £ ) a year
- Unlimited Load / Storage: Yes
- Unlimited Sets: Yes
- Original file storage: Yes
- Other: Ad free browsing / Stats / HD video upload
- Pros: good privacy & licensing options for each picture. Well established website with a large user base.
- Cons: pricier than 500px , so-so interface and UI, has not changed much lately
- Price: Plus 19.95 $ (or ~ 12.3 £ ) (*)
- Unlimited Load / Storage: Yes
- Unlimited Sets: Yes
- Original file storage: ???
- Other: Stats / Sets / Stories
- Pros: Slick'n Sexy interface. Very good content quality, Cheaper than Flickr with the "Plus" option
- Cons:Less flexible in Privacy and licensing options
Both services do offer a Developer API to integrate with them, I have not used them so far so I can't really feedback on that. In general I think it's going to be difficult to move away from Flickr at least for me, as up there I have pretty much every picture I took since I own a digital camera on their servers (that's around ~7K images). However recently when I want to showcase a particular picture and get some feedback from other photographers, I've found that this is much easier to be done on 500px . I used to invest a lot of time in Flickr years ago, and back then it was easier to get feedback, but today it seems much more difficult to simply upload a pic and get some instant feedback. As soon as I created the 500px account instead, and put some photos up there, I got an instant reaction from other photographers and felt that it was quite easy to reciprocate by visiting their stream and have a look!
In short, not sure if I am going to migrate, mainly because it will be a painful process if I decide to do it...but I am very tempted!
(*) They also offer an "Awesome" package at 49.95 $ ( or ~ 31 £ ) a year which includes a personalised portfolio with Google Analytics integration. Don't need it, not considering it in my comparison!
Download Musica: la strada giusta
Finalmente, sembra che qualcuno (in questo caso la Apple) si stia muovendo nella giusta direzione per quanto riguarda il download di brani musicali (da mettere sul proprio PC o sul lettore portatile come l'iPod): si tratterebbe di una sorta di tariffa forfait (o di un abbonamento flat) che permetta ai sottoscrittori di accedere in modo illimitato al catalogo musicale offerto dalle librerie digitali online (come iTunes). Personalmente, la ritengo una buona notizia anche se è necessario attendere un'offerta concreta per poter valutare ogni aspetto. Ad esempio, che ne sarà dei DRM e/o della possibilità di trasferire i files su vari dispositivi in possesso al sottoscrittore (per uso personale, ovviamente)?
Youschool, l’alternativa a Youtube
Leggo oggi sul giornale che in questi giorni il ministro Fioroni ha patrocinato l'apertura di Youschool un sito che, nelle intenzioni, è destinato a fare concorrenza a Youtube per quanto riguarda l'utilizzo nelle scuole. Ok, mi dico, vediamo.

Non funziona un cazzo :rotfl: L'unica cosa che da segni di vita è la fantastica scritta (probabilmente consigliata dagli esperti di linguaggio giovanile del Ministro) : ke bello qst portale di YouSchool dedicato a noi alunni!!! - - - Bellissimooooo!!!!!!! - - - In bocca al lupo a tutti gli alunni x l'inizio del nuovo anno scolastico!.
Usabilità: inesistente. Layout: totalmente scazzato (A TABELLE!!!). Funzionalità: incomprensibili. Ho provato anche con Konqueror (figuriamoci :asd: ) ma non è migliorato molto. Qualcuno può provare con Explorer e dirmi se la situazione migliora?
Edit: così per farmi del male ho provato ad aprire il sorgente. La cosa più bella è uno script javascript posizionato addirittura al di fuori del documento HTML. Nonostante la pretesa di essere XHTML 1.0 Transitional, la pagina fallisce miseramente il test con solo 76 errori. Eh beh. Non che io sia meglio eh, però almeno posso dare la colpa ai plugin e agli ad code che non rispettano lo standard :asd:
Peer to Peer: what next?
In these days one of the major peer-to-peer networks (Edonkey-Emule) has recieved a severe blow, when one of its major servers (RazorBack 2) had been shut down by the belgian police. This causes some concern by people utilizing those technologies: the majority of people using peer-to-peer technologies and software doesn't really know how they work, neither they do know what kind of information and data they are REALLY sharing over the network.
In this short article, I will show you some of the "technologies" involved in those project: where are you connecting? What are you sharing? What kind of info do you broadcast over the network? Are you anonymous? Are you allowing third-party content (illegal, copyrighted, whatever!) to be dropped on your PC? We are going to know a little more what is the application logic of two big known p2p clients (Emule and Bittorrent), and two less known clients (Freenet and Waste).
Peer to peer – Emule – Chiuso Razorback 2
Pare proprio che sia stato assestato un duro colpo alla rete Edonkey/Emule, una delle più grosse reti "peer to peer" diffuse al mondo. Secondo più fonti (1 - 2 - 3) è ormai appurato che la polizia belga abbia compiuto un sequestro la scorsa mattina, eliminando dalla rete uno dei server più importanti (Razorback 2) e mettendo sotto custodia l'amministratore della macchina. Il server centralizzato come da protocollo non ospita i files scambiati dagli utilizzatori, ma solamente le informazioni su dove trovarli tra gli appartenenti alla rete. Questo shutdown non intacca tuttavia gli utilizzatori dell'estensione decentralizzata della rete Edonkey/Emule, rappresentata dal protocollo Kadmelia.
Dubito che questi sequestri servano a qualcosa. Ormai sono disponibili algoritmi totalmente distribuiti che permettono di decentralizzare totalmente le azioni dei programmi (quali ad esempio lo scambio di files). Esistono anche progetti (vedi Freenet che permettono agli utenti di pubblicare e leggere qualsiasi cosa presente in rete mantenendo l'anonimato. Insomma, dubito che si potranno fermare le pratiche illegali con queste azioni. Forse sarebbe meglio tentare strade diverse.
